Dear Head Teacher,
The materials shown at Bonus Pastor School are utterly shocking and even more shocking is the response of the Church authorities to these issues. The films that have been shown there are wrong, pornographic, show attempted suicide, deliberate killing, religious abuse and are deeply corrupting. Our Holy Mother the Church is duty bound to protect children from abuse and her very own definition of abuse includes "non-contact activities, such as involving children in looking at, or in the production of, sexual images , watching sexual activities, encouraging children to behave in sexually inappropriate ways, or grooming a child in preparation for abuse (including via the internet)." (http://www.csasprocedures.uk.net/chapters/p_definitions.html). And yet the response of the school is to vilify and exclude the parent who has bravely asked the school to change what it does. He was first bushed off by the school. Then when he asked the governors of the School (some of whom are appointed by the diocese) to sort it out he found that they choose to defend the school. He also finds that that the diocese has not acted. And for all that, he has been excluded from his own sons prize giving.
We too have fought these battles. We protested at primary school children being shown video footage of male and female pelvises and being asked to label the anatomy. We were told that the use of these images were approved by Archbishop Nicholls (that is in fact true) and also told that, while we might withdraw our children from the classes, the school could not stop other children knowing that they had been withdrawn and that the school would therefore be unable to protect our children from any bullying that occurred as a result of our attempts to protect them.
In our secondary school we protested to the previous Archbishop of Southwark asked to fill in about questionnaire that repeatedly asked children age 12 to think whether or not they may be homosexual and he then told us that he had left us to sort it out. We pointed out that the questionnaire was being used in other schools and he did nothing as far as we know.
Child abuse is a serious matter. Post Nolan we know this. So what do we see. Children, in Bonus Pastor School class were shown video footage that is clearly deserving of at least an 18 classification. They were criticised if they tried to leave. Their parents are ignored if they protest. And not only does the Church do nothing, but in the mould of the greatest scandal in her recent history, she seeks to protect and justify the abusers and vilify those who , so heroically, bring that abuse to light.
Yours Faithfully,
Drs A and J Treloar

Dear Head Teacher,
I am shocked to hear of the film content shown to 14 year olds. As educators, you have a responsibility to look after the spiritual welfare of the pupils under your care. The parents of the pupils of this school should be outraged by such a scandal in a Catholic College. One needs to seriously consider if this College is Catholic.

Dear Head Teacher,
What more can we say? Please, please, act immediately to stop this corrupting material being shown to children. There is no way you can justify this since it not only goes against direct Church teaching (specifically contradicting guideline sin ‘The Truth and Meaning of Human Sexuality’), but also offending against everything the Church through scripture and the saints has ever taught on purity and morality. To corrupt young people in this way is a very grave sin. Who, in your opinion, will be culpable and have to answer for it? Don’t fool yourselves into thinking no-one will be judged for this. I beg you to search your consciences and right this wrong as soon as possible, both for the sake of those young people at risk of corruption and for the sake of your own souls. I’m sure you don’t need to be reminded about the millstones...

Kathryn

The title Catholic should not be used by this school. The title should be stripped from them and any material referring to them. This is a deceptive school and parents should be warned of the contents within it.

Dear Head Teacher,
This whole scenario is shocking to the extreme. It is child abuse in the classroom and sanctioned by a so-called ‘Catholic’ school. My children are all young adults now and I had to fight some similar battles in my own local Catholic school. It is so sad that children are still suffering this today in an environment which ought to be trusted. We need to admit that the souls of our children are not being nurtured in these environments.

Dear Head Teacher,
I correspond with you to express my deep concern at the unacceptable contents and the potential negative impact of the video authorised and used by your College, in religious education. Would Christ produce , authorise or use this material? No He would not - but Satan would .Can you reasonably call yourself a Catholic College on one hand and on the other permit and use this most erroneous and deeply misleading and offensive material in the name of religious education .This is not religious education --it is evil education.
Jesus said to His disciples’ Things that make people fall into sin are bound to happen. But how terrible for the one that make them happen. It would be better for him if a large millstone were tied around his neck and he were thrown into the sea than for him to cause one of these little ones to sin.

Patrick

Dear Head Teacher,
I am appalled at the videos that your students are exposed to. They are morally wrong, contrary to the Teachings of Jesus, and to be honest downright disgusting. As a catholic college/school you should be leading the way in protecting our youngsters from such filth and the people responsible for exposing the students to this should resign and never be able to teach again.
You have not been placed in such a position of trust to expose these lifestyles to students. If you feed a diet of McDonalds to youth they get fat if you feed a diet of immorality you sow the seeds of curiosity down the degradable road of darkness you are responsible for this and it must be stopped now.

Dear Head Teacher,
As a secretary in a Catholic Primary School I was saddened to read about the material that you are allowing to be shown to the pupils in your care. As Head of a Catholic College you have a duty to uphold and teach the values and teachings of the Catholic Church. As a mother of two daughters, that is what I expected from the Catholic Secondary School that they attended.
Also, I think you will find in an examination of conscience that watching impure images should be confessed.
A Catholic College should be nurturing the students’ spiritual life, not filling their minds with the images that have been shown to them. As for the video about euthanasia, I would say that it is very disturbing to young minds. What about palliative care in our hospices?
I was so upset that I have written a letter to Archbishop Vincent Nichols, a copy of which you will receive in the post.

Dear Head Teacher,
As a R.E. Co-ordinator I have to question whether this is the only way to encourage healthy discussion of these pertinent issues, particularly from a Catholic point of view?
There is so much ‘in-your-face’ media that youth are bombarded with. Should school be a place that imparts knowledge sensitively with due respect to the faith we follow, or should it be considered to be just another vehicle that conveys debatable issues without sanction?
As an educator and parent, I would object to these clips been shown to my children. I am in support of the protesters.

Dear Head Teacher,
We are Catholic parents of five beautiful children which God has entrusted to our care. We do strongly believe that God wills us to preserve their purity and protect them against all persons who would deliberately intrude on this, break it down and try to destroy it. Parents remain the primary educators of their children and no education department, governing body or teacher outside the family has the right to deliberately damage the purity of a child. We find the articles which we have read about your school and its sex education materials truly disturbing, and pray that you will think carefully about what you are doing to these children, especially if you claim to be a Catholic school where parents are under the impression that their children are in a safe environment, and feel that the teachers and head teacher should be trusted. If any of our children were exposed to such culture of death information, or forced to sit down and watch the material your school thinks is acceptable for RE, or any subject for that matter, we certainly would not remain silent and accept it. This is truly an intrusion on the child’s rights to chastity and purity. The images displayed in your material constitutes child abuse according to English Law. The violent suicidal scenes are horrifying and really disturbing to even us as adults. No child should be subjected to such scenes and immoral information.
We will pray that you will humbly admit your error, and change your material which would conform to true Catholic teaching on morality, purity and chastity.

Mrs I.A.Botha

Dear Head Teacher,
The film you show the students on Euthanasia is simply propaganda and should not be shown to children in catholic schools, or in any school for that matter. Britain has been at the forefront of palliative care. We should be proud of that. The idea that euthanasia is a legitimate option puts vulnerable people at risk. The ‘right to dies’ becomes the duty to die. It fundamentally changes the way we view ourselves and each other. Those who advocate euthanasia invoke the idea of the supremacy of personal autonomy over all other considerations. This is the opposite of Christianity. Suicide is the number one killer of young people in London. Showing this film is nothing short of child abuse.

Paul

Dear Head Teacher,
I am writing to express my concern about the material that children in your school are being subjected to. I have taught in various school, catholic and otherwise. I have seen in practice what both Pope John Paul and Pope Benedict have theorised about; the fact that the common culture of relativism lacks the internal coherence necessary to defend itself against extremisms that will infiltrate it in subtle ways. So, pupils are subjected to promotion of euthanasia on the grounds that they ‘have heard the other side of the argument’. Any objection raised is shouted down as ‘being your opinion’. If you try to say it is unhealthy for society and unjust, back comes the reply ‘most people in a survey thought otherwise’. As Pope Benedict said in his speech in Westminster Hall ‘if the only criteria is social consensus then the fragility of the system is all too clear...’ It is more vital than ever that pupils in catholic schools be given clear guidance as to what is right and wrong with all the reasons required. This does not take away their freedom but rather adds to it. They become more discerning in their judgement of passing values and fashions. They will make their own minds up in due course. What a shame that some catholic schools seem to be following the prevalent popular orthodoxy rather than trying to be, quite simply, catholic.
Yours Faithfully,
Mark

Dear Head Teacher,
I am absolutely BLOWN AWAY! I am an American home schooling mother. I have raised my daughter very Catholic and very pure. She is 15 and if someone showed her that movie, ‘Keeping Mum’, I’d be fit to be tied! I am sitting here holding my face in shock! I’m no prude but that’s beyond disgraceful and, it is NOT Catholic. I’m repulsed that the woman has used Our Lord’s name in a curse (and that’s the easiest part of the film!) If my child were at this school, I’d do whatever it took to get her out! **Please** take this up with the people in charge of the people in charge until someone sane and CATHOLIC will listen to you! This is wrong! It’s abusive to the children and it’s so ‘over the top’ repulsive...goodness! I think I’d end up in jail with how poorly I’d react to someone doing this to my daughter! I will pray for you to get this shut down, and for them to have to pay for the counselling for these young minds they’ve exposed to this! Terrible scandal to these children!

I am deeply saddened to read of the films that Bonus Pastor College is showing to its students. As a Catholic college, it is your duty, your sacred responsibility, to teach the truth held within the Catholic church. Today’s youth are bombarded with images of death and depravity in life. No wonder so many of them struggle with depression. I urge you to take up your proper role and teach our young people about the beauty of life, and how all humans should be treated with respect and dignity.

Dear Head Teacher,
Why would a catholic school decide to hurt the Sacred Heart of Jesus in this way? Indeed Jesus sweated blood in the garden due to our sins and more so for those that are committed by those who have been consecrated to Him. The church needs to take action in this. We are called by Jesus to bring the little children to Him not leading them astray. Matt 18:5-6 Whoever receives one such child in my name receives me, but whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a great millstone fastened round his neck and to be drowned in the depth of the sea.
Remember we are in the world for the world but not of the world. We do not need sin to teach our children, there is a void that needs to be filled but the only one who can fill that is Jesus not the counterfeits. Let’s put this to prayer for the evil one is attacking the church anyway possible, offer it up to have this sin brought down to its knees in the name of Jesus. This sin cannot be explained away, there is no valid reason for any of this. Pray, pray pray unceasingly for the church. God is merciful, there is no sin that God cannot forgive.

Pat

Do you take your cue from popular culture or do you take your cue from Our Lord Jesus Christ?
Teach the children to swim against popular culture and do listen to God to love and obey and to do what is right in His sight. Teach them to live good and holy lives and always be prepared- death can come at any age and then eternal life begins either in hell or in heaven after a rinse through purgatory.
If you encourage the children in the ways of sin you yourself are guilty of the sin of scandal.
Be courageous and stand up to the popular culture- be the fragrance of Christ and teach the children what is right and TRUTH - not sordid and seedy and sick as the popular culture is today.

Dear Head Teacher,
We were appalled to read of this un-Catholic teaching in a Catholic School. Of course the Archbishop can do something. His position as the chief shepherd of his diocese means he should act immediately, for a start by ex-communicating the Head Teacher who resists removing this unnecessary form of sex-education from his school. That would wake up the rest of his staff. The next act should be an apology to the pupils for having been disturbed, undoubtedly, and worse possibly actually corrupted spiritually and morally by teachers. How does he, through the parish priest, now plan to undo the harm? I strongly recommend a book called ‘The Fuzz Factor’ to restore a sense to all Catholics of what their time in this world is about. Its author is Dr. Jimmy Clair, the ISBN No is 0-9529627-1-3, and it is published by Kolbe Publications in Cork, Ireland.
God bless you and I hope you succeed in damage limitations at that poor college.

The material used in the school is disgraceful and a total disservice to the young people in the school - stories of immoral behaviour can never nourish the young; show them what is good - and the only good is recorded/ inscribed in traditional morality: i.e. euthanasia, abortion, homosexual acts, betrayal, contraception are ultimately destructive. Show them what is good and helpful: there is no new morality - only dangerous immorality which will destroy lives and bring misery.

Dear Head Teacher,
How dare you call your school Catholic when you are showing graphic pornographic videos to young people and taking away their innocence.
You should be teaching them about the commandments of God and how to live good lives by staying in a state of grace by receiving the sacraments.
The TV has given our young people a wrong sense of morality through soap operas and their indecent comedy shows so you should be teaching them how to avoid getting into trouble, by teaching discernment so that they can see behind the veiled messages on TV and keep away from the indoctrination of TV.
They need to hear about sanctifying grace which is given thriugh the sacraments so that they can avoid falling into sin, they must be taught that abortion and suicide are mortal sins which kill the soul as well as the body.
I would not send my child to your school if I had to live there but would encourage its closure as a parent.

Margaret

Re Tragic R.E. Department.
Dear Head Teacher,
With reference to the above department and unacceptable material used to interfere with normal, healthy childhood experiences formed within normal family life, I would ask you to re-assess support given to harmful material used and to pay closer attention to what is going on in the R.E. classroom and to verbal comments attached to this material during its delivery.
A great deal of effort, care and attention is given to children by the majority of parents, in order to equip them with the skills needed to develop normal healthy relationships and to build a normal, healthy family life of their own.
I would ask you to become aware of the consequences of allowing such inappropriate, if not abusive material forced upon young minds.
Perhaps no one has the right to `suppose`, that the majority of children could deal with such material. Tragic consequences of mental ill-health caused by the stress of not completely understanding the issues surrounding such material should be avoided at all cost. Indeed the Professional has great difficulty, at times, assessing and understanding such behaviours associated with the material you are allowing to be used in the R.E. department.
We can only hope and trust as Rogers,C, 1980 demands from Society; after his life time work in psychoanalysis that ‘Teachers and parents at best do no harm’.
It is evident from the surveys and parents letters to the school on this subject of ill prepared and inappropriate material being used in the RE department that the school is in danger of doing just that - harming the children.
On a personal note, our three children have all gone onto higher education a few years ago and we have been delighted and completely satisfied with the standards of Catholic education in this area around Liverpool. I am so sorry for the parents who have had to undergo such stress and anxiety which could have been prevented.

I am deeply concerned about the use of inappropriate material which is shown in the place of a Roman Catholic education - the person in charge of the school should be SACKED immediately and if this does not send out the correct message, then the school should be CLOSED altogether with parent electing to follow a suitable means of home-schooling, including the teachings of Blessed John Paul II. Our society is going down the toilet because of treacherous methods of indoctrination and the onslaught via the propaganda of dictatorial relativism. Euthanasia, abortion, homosexual acts, capital punishment and contraception - this is the culture of death ! The most holy sacraments of the Roman Catholic Church - this is the culture of Life. Our parish has recently taken part in a petition to the Secretary of State for Education objecting to the use of explicit sex-education in primary schools. 45,000 signatures have been collected in parishes nationwide to be presented to Michael Gove next Thursday.
I was consequently very shocked to hear from HLI that a Catholic school cares so little about the moral formation of our children that they would show immoral and anti-Catholic material to innocent young people. I will be writing to the Archbishop about my concerns. I am horrified and sickened to the heart. What chance have Catholic parents of bringing their children to love the Lord when schools are contradicting everything that is good?

‘The school has an obligation to teach RE according to the guidelines laid down in the national curriculum…’ We do have a duty to be ‘loyal to the king’. We do have a duty to be obedient to legitimate civil authority in all things so long as these things do not transgress God’s Law. How does the material that you persist in showing under the guise of RE fit into God’s Law? The governments of this world will come and go and like us all, will one day stand before Almighty God and be judged according to His Law. God will not accept the excuse that we had to obey Man’s law. Mankind’s law that is in keeping with God’s Law is good law, all else is a travesty, a perversion! There is no heavenly inheritance for those who die in a state of unrepentance for violations of God’s Law.

Dear Head Teacher,
I am writing as a Catholic mother and grandmother to express my concern at reports that inappropriate material has been shown to pupils in the school. It has been alleged that the material in question was shown because similar material is seen by pupils elsewhere; however, it is clear that most parents make strenuous efforts to protect their children from unsuitable material, thus to have it presented to them in what parents believe to be a safe environment is not only completely unacceptable but a breach of parental trust, since the school stands in the place of parents in the matter of care. Moreover, whereas if pupils do come across unsuitable material elsewhere, they know that it is not sanctioned by their parents and those who stand in loco parentis, if shown it in school, they are likely to be even more disturbed because it signals the approval of teachers and, by inference, the parents that have consigned them to the care of those teachers. In conclusion, I would respectfully urge that the school reconsider this matter and seek positive media with which to guide and instruct pupils in their faith, and to prepare them to enter adult life as responsible citizens.
Yours Faithfully,
Ann

Dear Head Teacher,
Hi , I have just watched a sample of some of the material you show the 14 yr olds who attend your school. I am shocked and stunned that anyone could possibly believe this material to be ok for teenagers. I have a 14 yr old myself, and am only too aware of how vulnerable and sensitive children are at this age. I can see this is all thought provoking stuff, but it’s a sad old world if we have to resort to this sort of gutter material in order to help our children address some of the most important aspects of life. Please, please think again about showing this sophisticated and very shocking material to the children in your care.
Yours Faithfully,
Caroline

Dear Head Teacher,
I am shocked to see a so called Catholic school poisoning our children with this evil material shown to innocent children during their RE lessons. You should be ashamed to steal the innocence of children. Our Lord said in the Gospels that it would be better that those who lead one of these little ones astray have a millstone tied around their necks and that they be cast into the sea.

Dear Head Teacher,
I’m the director of RE at a Catholic School in Kent. I use videos in my teaching as a matter of course but I always ensure the video is appropriate to the course and the class’s learning. I am also aware of certification and how appropriate it is for the group’s ability.
If there is a video that has useful content but which also has scenes that challenge the ethos of the school I am careful to edit and explain what is being shown. Indiscriminate showing of videos that contain nudity and vulgar language are always avoided. I would only ever show a scene that demonstrates an inherently anti-Catholic idea, e.g. euthanasia, if it helped students understand the issue being shown and I would always accompany it with a point of discussion so students are aware of the Catholic stance. I would never show it for entertainment or without a careful lesson about the Catholic stance.
I would find it a shocking betrayal of Catholic safeguarding for teachers in Catholic schools to show videos such as those posted here. It undermines all the work Catholic educators are trying to do.
Yours Faithfully,
Andrew

Dear Head Teacher,
The word ‘Catholic’ does indeed mean universal (from the Greek) but in the context it is used in the name of your school it means ‘Roman Catholic.’ Now, one shouldn’t have to explain the responsibilities that are placed upon you but sadly it appears that no one ever has. Therefore please allow me to enlighten you. It means that you ought to seek out something called a Catechism - it is a small book with a blue cover (older ones had a yellow cover) and read it. This, in theory at least, is what your school should be upholding. That is to say that nothing done at the school should directly challenge the teaching of the catechism in such a way that the teaching of the church is not underlined as having primacy.
Please note that this does not mean that opposing viewpoints should not be taught - in line with the RE requirements for the national curriculum - but that there is a difference between providing Catholic teaching and demonstrating where others may disagree along with the reasons why AND using provocative material to ‘stimulate thought’ on a topic without then providing the necessary teaching to underpin Catholic teaching on the subject.
Please note the word Catholic keeps coming up - there is a reason for that. It is because the parents who provide you with their young are doing so because you are a Catholic school. If they did not want their offspring taught in line with church teaching then they wouldn’t have sent them to you. At least in theory. As it happens it would seem to be entirely possible that they could send them to you and STILL not have them taught in line with church teaching.
As for the comment about ‘compromise your email account’ I can’t decide if this was an intentional lie intended to prevent people looking at the website - in which case morally reprehensible - or complete ineptitude on the part of whomever was providing IT advice - equally unforgiveable in a computing college.
So not Catholic and either not morally sound or competent in its own specialist subject?
Yours Faithfully,
Joshua

Dear Head Teacher,
I am a Teacher in the Southwark Diocese if I am honest this type of teaching abuse on the sanctity of human life, does not surprise me. Even secular school would not subject their children to such material. I think the reaction of the school is indicative of a larger problem, within the church. In my experience there are too many RE teachers in Catholic schools who are teaching their own version of the faith, with a left wing agenda, with no one to hold them to account. This is damaging young minds and hearts. And we know Our Lords response to this ‘If anyone harms one of these my little ones, it would be better a millstone was hung round his neck and he was cast to the bottom of the ocean’ Matt 15. So this is not a trivial matter, to Christ, so I hope that the Magisterium and laity have the courage to stand up against this abuse, ‘ as evil thrives when good people do nothing’.
Yours Faithfully,
Pete

Dear Head Teacher,
The children in the school should be presented with clear information on why these films will no longer be shown and why they were and are inappropriate viewing for any Catholic and anyone at all with norms of respect for self and others
Parents whose children had to watch this rubbish should be advised that their child may be distressed or disturbed. I was and my childhood days are past. I see from other comments on this site that children may feel embarrassed and ashamed by having viewed such material. They should be assured by the school and by their parents that the school was at fault. They are sent to school and expected to obey their teachers. Their teachers failed them.
Any staff member or governor responsible for the showing of this material should no longer work for this school. They can no longer expect the children to take instruction from them or see them as authority figures.
Children should be assured that it is right to expose what is wrong and to seek to right it. Those who speak out often face the most villainous false accusations and trials themselves. Our Lord knows that experience personally. He will support and bless us through it all.
Yours Faithfully,
Anonymous

The material you are showing these children is disgraceful and pornographic and a cause of serious sin and harm to your students.
A Catholic school should be teaching modesty and purity to its pupils as they are exposed to so much of this type of degrading and pernicious rubbish in the mass media.
I would not send a child of mine to your school and would wish it to be closed if you continue to use these videos/films.

Dear Head Teacher,
As a Catholic former teacher and a Governor of a non- Catholic school I find the content of this video material appalling. Everybody involved with education now cannot fall to be aware that this material is easily available to young people via the Internet etc. However I would welcome an explanation as to what the school seeks to achieve by using it as a teaching resource.
It may be that it is approved in certain quarters but I would ask that this be looked at by the Bishops of England and Wales and that they approve it before it is inflicted on young people at Bonus Pastor School. I do not believe that the Good Shepherd would ever look after the flock by subjecting them to this material. I believe that the Head Teacher should write to all parents informing them what is being used to educate the children and that they should have the right to withdraw their children from classes which use this material

Dear Head Teacher,
I am an experienced, retired Head of Religious Education in both Catholic and non-Catholic schools, including one sixth form College. There is no way that any of the material used by Bonus Pastor College would have been used in any Department headed by me. Clearly, the staff, including the Head teacher of Bonus Pastor are Catholics in name only.
If, as Sacred Scripture teaches, 'those who instruct many in virtue will shine as bright stars for all eternity' what of those who teach vice? Any teacher using (or permitting the use of) this appalling material, must reflect urgently on the words of Our Lord in St Matthew's Gospel (which are wrongly, incidentally, applied only to paedophiles) 'Those who scandalize one of these little ones who believe in Me, better that a millstone be put about his neck and he be drowned in the depths of the sea.' To set young people on a path of immorality, as the RE staff at Bonus Pastor College are doing, is to risk their very salvation.
Well done those parents who have acted to expose this scandal. I hope you sue the socks off these scoundrels masquerading as Catholic teachers

I am writing to vehemently protest this outrageous abuse of teaching authority. What place do such graphic and scandalous images have in the moral and intellectual formation of a young and impressionable Catholic? None. It is high time Catholic schools, such as yours, return to the fundamentals of the Faith and cease to inculcate confusion, moral laxity and a spirit of compromise with the secular world. Please put an end to this terrible abuse right away for the good of souls and in obedience to the teaching of our Lord, Jesus Christ.

It is shocking that you have banned a parent for highlighting grave matters of concern within your school; undermining the chastity, charity and faith of Catholic school children. This is a perverse situation, especially as it is taking place in a so-called Catholic school.
It is not right to hold the position of Head in a Catholic school if you do not feel committed to the Catholic Faith. To do so is deception. You are abusing your authority to undermine the faith and corrupt the minds and souls of innocent youth and that is a scandal. Who really is your Master, I wonder?

Dear Head Teacher,
As a mother of six children, some still in school, I am shocked, that such blatant pornographic material is being shown to children in a Catholic School, in fact any school. Such material would not even appear on the TV before 9pm.
Even the BBC states ‘From 9pm the TV watershed helps parents protect children from unsuitable material. In all but exceptional circumstances, programmes before 9pm are suitable for general audiences including children. From 9pm they are progressively suitable only for adults. Producers have strict guidelines for dealing with issues of taste, sexual matters, violence and strong language. Every audience includes people of different ages, cultures, religions and sensibilities. A warning is transmitted if we judge that some people may find a particular broadcast distressing.’
SO WHY AREN’T OUR CATHOLIC CHILDREN BEING TREATED WITH RESPECT AND PROTECTED, PARENTS EXPECT THE SCHOOLS TO ACT IN LOCO PARENTIS, WHAT KIND OF HEAD RUNS SUCH A DYSFUNCTIONAL DEPARTMENT. I CAN ONLY IMAGINE SHE HAS NO CHILDREN OF HER OWN IT IS TIME SHE READ THE BIBLE
Mark 9:42 ‘And whoever shall offend one of these little ones that believe in me, it is better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and he were cast into the sea’

Dear Head Teacher,
I am a secondary school teacher working at a school in South London. Young people can easily access the kind of morally dubious videos you have shown in your school on TV - it is hard to avoid them. To afford them a dignified status by presenting them in a Catholic RE lesson is very ill advised, and will encourage the children to think - whatever path any discussion takes - that euthanasia, suicide, fornication and adultery are reasonable lifestyle choices. Our young people need clear moral teaching in our Catholic schools - they are unlikely to get it from life in general. There are plenty of videos on You Tube that promote pro life, pro marriage teaching - why don’t you use those?

Mary

Dear Head Teacher,
As a teacher I know that it is important to present children with appropriate information but unfortunately there is a danger of engendering copycat behaviour or of stimulating unhealthy passions. Human beings are a mixture of all sorts of emotions and having viewed a short excerpt of the sexually explicit scenes of one of the videos on the ‘bonus-pastor-exposed’ web-site, I find myself questioning the professionalism of the teachers who offer this type of material to children. If we want to encourage chastity and virtue I don’t think it helps to portray teenage sex and dysfunctional parenting. What must also be questioned is whether this school is actually Catholic in its ethos. I think parents have every right to demand the removal of the head teacher and the senior management team who have allowed this type of lesson to be taught in a Catholic school. Do these people have any fear of the words Our Lord spoke about having a millstone put round their necks and being cast into the sea? Even if they don’t, I think we have to worry about the impact of these lessons on the moral formation of our children.

Dear Head Teacher,
As a teacher in a Catholic school in Toronto, I found the information posted on this website concerning the curriculum being paraded as religious education appalling, profoundly distressing and, I am grateful that my children do not have to sit through this anti-Christian rhetoric with no guidance from a responsible adult. Actually, I would question whether such a person exists in the RE department at Bonus Pastor. The material that is displayed and used for instruction is blatantly against Catholic teaching and although may reflect current societal values, is not a reflection of who we are suppose to be as true believers in Christ. There is no clear rationale what students are expected to learn or take away from this except that the superficial message, which is actually quite profound, is an acceptable way of conducting or pursuing relationships, treating parents and peers. Maybe this is a truer reflection of the position of the teachers who present such material as educational.

Dear Head Teacher,
As one who has complained about catholic schools in the past I know that these parents, who are perfectly correct in what they say, are a minority in the school. Nine out of ten pupils who start Catholic Schools have been `done` baptised` but their parents are in now way `practicing` or `even interested` Catholics. Your school like many others provides in other subjects a high standard of education, I am sure, but when it comes to `teaching religion 98 per cent will leave school indifferent to the Catholic Faith. So when we are discussing how something should be taught we should be guided more by where we have `failure` than by our success. The Head of course is on a hiding to nothing. The Bishops do not care about their failure, the CES certainly does not care, so why get involved. Catholic Education is `corrupt`.

Dear Head Teacher,
I think it is quite serious that the head teacher of a school should make false accusations to the police. It is very unprofessional as well as being vindictive and totally inappropriate behaviour for the head teacher of a Catholic school. We need to have people in management positions in Catholic Schools to make considered and responsible decisions and people who vindictively respond to criticism with false allegations to the police should not hold management positions. Their judgement is clearly suspect. What is even worse is that the person accused was merely arguing that Catholic schools should be Catholic. We need people at the head of Catholic schools who are orthodox in their beliefs and not given to bearing false witness and promoting anti-Catholic content in school lessons. There seems to be a large question about the orthodoxy of the content of RE lessons in this school. At the very least there should be in-depth inquiry

Dear Head Teacher,
I work in a very secularised state school (e.g. no worship assemblies at all, etc) but have never come across such pornographic material being used there as you seem to be trying to justify using in your ‘religious’ school.
There is no religion that would condone the use of such material in order to stimulate discussion! It is becoming more and more clear that those running Catholic schools are hell bent on destroying the Faith of our children. Please be assured that Mr Greg Clovis is no longer alone. Many of us have begun to wake up and we will be on the march against the likes of yourself, Mrs Ruth Holden, your Chair of Governors, Mrs Pat Barber, the diocesan and national Catholic educational establishment and anyone else who thinks they can compromise the Faith of our children for which our forebears gave their lives.

Whatever the rights and wrongs of this matter, any school must understand that parents are the primary protectors and educators of their children and any other authority, such as a school, is in subsidiary to this primary parental responsibility.
Therefore if parents wish to protect their children from educational materials which they believe to be detrimental to their children, this absolutely must be respected. Their parents gave life to these children and they have both the primary right and the duty to educate and protect them.

Dear Head Teacher,
I can imagine no circumstances in which Keeping Mum would be an appropriate video for Catholic children. The language alone, let alone the explicit pictures and the ethos of the video, make it highly offensive to Catholic sensibilities.
The euthanasia video is a clever piece of emotional propaganda: I can see that being appropriate if it was analysed from that point of view and followed by a discussion to teach the Catholic Church’s teaching on euthanasia; but if the parent’s reports are accurate that did not happen.
However, I was saddened to see that neither the school head nor the chair of governors recognises the extreme inappropriateness of Keeping Mum; and that makes it easier to believe that the euthanasia video was not used appropriately.
I can understand that the parents objecting may have made their points in ways that were heated and emotional - I would have done so too - but that does not invalidate their concerns, merely demonstrate the strength of their feelings.
I hope and pray that you re-consider your position and clarify that you will not be using such material in the future.
You may be aware that this is now getting national attention having been featured on some much-read and influential Catholic blogs: early action would be prudent!

Ben Trovato
